The Protea flower is the National flower of South Africa. It is one of the oldest families of flowers on earth, dating back 300 million years. Greek legend tells us that the protea was named after Proteus, son of Poseidon. With its mythological associations to change and transformation it is not surprising that in the language of flowers, the protea symbolises diversity and courage.
